Unitrus Introduces New Waterborne Emulsion for Intumescent Steel Fire Coatings, A Viable Alternative to Synthomer

Sichuan Unitrus New Materials Co., Ltd. has launched a newly developed water-based emulsion tailored for waterborne intumescent fire retardant coatings for steel structures. This new binder serves as a high-performance alternative to Synthomer’s classic EMULTEX FR 797 emulsion, widely used in passive fire protection formulations.

Intumescent fire coatings rely heavily on polymer emulsion binders to form stable char layers during fire exposure. Unitrus’ new emulsion is a vinyl acetate-vinyl versatate copolymer dispersion, engineered to deliver controlled char expansion, excellent water resistance and low minimum film-forming temperature. Lab formulation tests confirm matching fire resistance performance, stable film formation and good compatibility with flame retardant systems, making it suitable for thin and ultra-thin steel fireproof coatings offering up to 120 minutes fire protection.

Developed by Unitrus’ internal R&D team, the emulsion has passed repeated formulation validation. It maintains consistent batch quality and complies with global environmental standards, free of APEO. Compared with imported counterparts, it provides reliable performance with improved supply stability and competitive cost advantages for coating manufacturers.

The new emulsion is now available for customer trials. Unitrus will continue to provide full formulation technical support to help coating makers switch raw materials smoothly, and further expand its portfolio of specialty polymer binders for fire protection materials.
