Perstorp Polyols, Inc. has confirmed the permanent shutdown of its manufacturing site in Toledo, Ohio, effective September 2, 2026. The facility was the only domestic producer of pentaerythritol (Penta) and trimethylolpropane (TMP) in the United States, also manufacturing di-pentaerythritol and sodium formate.
Built in 1976, the 45-acre Toledo plant employed around 130 staff, accounting for roughly 70% of Perstorp’s US workforce. Pentaerythritol is a critical polyol raw material widely used for alkyd resins, intumescent fire-retardant coatings, powder coatings and lubricants. Its closure will reshape the North American supply chain for polyol chemicals, creating tighter availability for fire protection coating manufacturers.
Perstorp states the decision came after a comprehensive review of its global manufacturing footprint, aiming to consolidate production into fewer strategically-located plants to improve operational efficiency. The group emphasizes that US sales, customer service and distribution functions remain operational, and it will continue supplying American customers via its overseas production bases.
Industry analysts note that long-term global oversupply in the polyol sector and low plant operating rates are key drivers behind this closure. The market now faces limited local pentaerythritol supply in North America, pushing many coating formulators to evaluate alternative suppliers for their fire-retardant and resin formulations.
